Virtualisation

Our company is primarily focused on dealing with the analysis and support of the currently available virtualisation solutions. Several of our engineers possess the VMware Certified Professional certification.

Background to the concept of virtualisation

Briefly summarized we can talk about virtualisation in the case when several (virtual) systems are operating on one piece of hardware at the same time, running independent operating systems on virtual machines. The concept of virtualisation systems is actually wider than this, but at the moment our company supports the previously outlined solutions.

Why is virtualisation good, and what is it good for?

The capacity of today's available server hardware usually exceeds the resource requirements of the system installed on the hardware. Aside from dedicated systems, on almost all systems there is unused capacity, but even among dedicated systems it is possible that high load appears only periodically and during in the remaining time the capacities of the device stay underutilised.

Virtualisation is aiming at these free capacities. Instead of the previous "one box - one system" model it consolidates the systems into a sufficiently powerful hardware and divides its resources in the form of virtual computers among the individual systems. Thus creating an optimal utilisation which is a cost-efficient solution.

One of the subsidiary advantages of consolidation coming with virtualisation is that the virtual hardware provides a certain hardware interface for the operators, protecting them from the compatibility, updating, and outage problems which occur during the process of hardware upgrades.

Subsidiary advantages of virtualisation

  • Less hardware
    • Decrease in maintenance costs,
    • Decrease in electricity consumption,
    • If the system is hosted in a co-location, the rental costs are lower.
  • Standard virtual hardware interface
  • Ensuring efficient resource use

In many cases these advantages are in themselves sufficient to financially justify switching to a virtual solution.
